Transferring Files from an iPad

The iStick for iPhone and iPadRecently on Kickstarter, a new project from Hyper was announced called iStick.

iStick is, “the World’s 1st USB drive with integrated Apple approved Lightning connector.” It is designed to allow you to move data between computers and the newest generation of iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch without the need for Internet or a wireless network connection. This data can include documents, video, music and photos. An iOS app will accompany the iStick so that users will be able to manage files, open files directly from the iStick and stream video.

We think this device will be a great tool to support instruction, since a question we’ve consistently received from teachers since iPad was released in 2010 is, “how to I put documents on — or take them off the device?

Since then we’ve learned a number of ways for sharing and transferring documents: connecting with a DropBox account, using the Google Drive app, sending an email, etc. But, in some schools where iPads are shared or when time is limited, this may not be the easiest solution.

Here are the two obvious benefits of an iStick in the classroom:

1. Faster sharing between devices

Share files from your computer quickly with students without having to worry about connecting to a cloud storage service. This can be especially useful when the iPads are being shared throughout the school.

2. Support for collaborative projects

Save files created on one mobile device then share with another device. This might come in handy when students are doing projects using GarageBand, iMovie, or Keynote where multiple students have gathered the media needed to complete the work.

Would you use the iStick? How do you share documents across devices?
