Three Cool Things to Make with Makey Makey in the Classroom!
Makey Makey is one of the coolest new obsessions in classrooms for STEAM – and there are so many uses! You may have heard of the Makey Makey banana piano, which is a fun way for students to learn how to code the Makey Makey with Scratch, but there are other great projects to try as well. If you are looking for some ideas, look no further than below:
#1: Webquest
By coding your Makey Makey to go to various different websites, you can have your students create a webquest exploration that flips your classroom. Have your students create questions or prompts on paper that match up with the websites they have chosen, and then have them code each touchpad on the Makey Makey to go to the various websites. As the student expert, they now hold the keys to your classroom!
#2: Presentation Mode
Have students create a multimedia presentation with video, slides, and perhaps even a website… but have students use the Makey Makey to navigate between parts of the presentation. Code each touchpad to flip to a different portion of the presentation as the students are in front of the classroom. They now have a fun way to present to the class.
#3: Sentence Stems
First, have students create practice stems for building sentences in the classroom. Next, have the students record themselves saying the sentence stems. Then have students code the Makey Makey to play each recording on a different touchpad. Finally, have the students set up their Makey Makey as a station. Now flip your classroom, and have students go around the room, writing out and finishing the sentence stems on paper.
Remember, the beauty of the Makey Makey is that it’s inherently fun for students. It’s all about being inventive and innovative – and best yet, there’s no wrong way to use it!
