Day 1 sessions

Creating Digital Books for a Multicultural Book Festival

Digital books are the perfect way to reinforce literacy concepts while also tapping into key 21st century skills. In this session, we will discuss strategies for having students create their own digital books that explore their unique cultures and backgrounds. We will explore specific platforms for digital stories such as Book Creator, StoryJumper, and Google Slides. We will then dive into ideas to include in our multicultural books, tools to support English language learners, and how we can share these books to a larger audience during our multicultural book festival.

Virtual Road Trip With Google My Maps, a PBL Activity

This session is a discussion on project-based learning (PBL) centered around Google apps and featuring Google My Maps. We will explore using Google Docs, Forms, Sheets and Sites to gather information for a virtual road trip that will be mapped out using Google My Maps. The purpose of this session is to introduce Google My Maps and integrate it into a project-based learning activity. It can be used in multiple grade levels and interdisciplinary as well. Participants will understand the elements of a project-based activity and be introduced to the features of Google My Maps. Educators will be able to use the information to craft their own independent or cooperative activities to broaden their students’ awareness of their country while sharing a virtual travel experience.

Microsoft Tools for Dyslexia and Learning Differences

Dyslexia and other learning differences can present significant challenges for individuals when it comes to reading, writing, and overall communication. Fortunately, there are numerous technology tools available to help individuals with dyslexia and other learning differences. One of the most popular tools is Microsoft’s suite of products, which includes Immersive Reader, Reading Coach, and more. In this presentation, we will explore how Microsoft tools can be used to help individuals with dyslexia and other learning differences succeed in academic and professional settings.

Benefits of Using ChatGPT for Teachers of Students with Learning Differences

Teachers of students with learning differences face unique challenges when it comes to supporting their students’ learning needs. However, with the advent of artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT, there is a new opportunity to support these teachers in their work. ChatGPT is an AI-powered chatbot that can provide personalized assistance and support to teachers in a range of subject areas. In this presentation, we will explore how ChatGPT can be used to assist teachers of students with learning differences in a variety of ways.

Prioritizing Performance Based Assessment in the Classroom

This session is designed to inform teachers of the benefits and importance of performance-based assessments (PBA) in the classroom. Performance-based assessments are valuable tools through which students are evaluated on understanding of specific topics. We will discuss the benefits of PBA over traditional exams and how they can improve students’ critical thinking skills while preparing them for the 21st century workforce. We will also show you how PBA aligns with your educational goals, highlight evidence of its effectiveness, and cover how it can be implemented.
