STEAM Education is reshaping how our students learn and develop the 21st century skills they will need in the future. By learning to think critically and creatively, and to collaborate and communicate effectively, students will be prepared to take on the global challenges facing the world, today and in the future. Included here is a list of three great STEAM lesson planning resources that will help you empower your students to learn and get motivated to help the world around them.
1. PBS Learning Media
PBS has been a go-to for parents and teachers looking for educational programming for decades. The high quality shows remain a fantastic resource for delivering educational material to students at home and in school, and they have since expanded their educational offerings to lessons on a range of topics from ELA to STEAM. PBS is a free website where teachers can browse for lessons based on what they are teaching, share those lessons with their students using Google Classroom and watch as their students get fully engaged with interactive lessons that not only inform but also entertain!
2. NASA – STEM Lessons from Space
With the recent launch of the James Webb Space Telescope after decades of careful planning and engineering, humanity is set to learn more than ever about the origins of our universe and our place in it. The discoveries we make will certainly have an effect on future careers in science and astronomy. What better time to teach about the universe with interactive lessons and resources from NASA itself? This site contains STEM lessons broken down into their constituent parts, including lessons taught by astronauts from the International Space Station. Help cultivate a sense of wonder in your students while teaching them priceless skills that will aid them in the future.
3. National Parks Service
Our final resource on this list comes to us from the National Parks Service. As we are reckoning with unprecedented changes to the natural world around us, students can learn and be inspired to contribute positively to the world around them. There are lesson plans, field experiences, classroom materials, and more available to educators on the website. There are also materials directly focused on how changes to the climate have been documented over the years and outlook for the future.
These are just a few of the many STEAM related resources for curating lessons for your students. If you would like to learn more about STEAM education, be sure to explore the courses on OTIS for educators, for example this course on demystifying STEAM education in the early education classroom.
