Assessing reading fluency with Fluency Tutor
Fluency Tutor is a fantastic solution to help the busy ELA, Language, and English teacher evaluate and assess his or her students’ ability to read aloud, deal with language and vocabulary, and practice timing and inflection. This website and Chrome extension help automate an essential, but time-consuming task for educators.
How it works
To use Fluency Tutor, the teacher simply logs in to the website and accesses preloaded reading content. For those users on Chromebooks, the Chrome extension is recommended. Once a reading passage is selected (based on lexile level and grade level), this content can be shared with students through their Google Drive accounts or within Google Classroom.

Students can record themselves reading all or part of the selected passage and then share with the teacher. For assistance, students can also access a dictionary and have the computer read it aloud as the student is practicing.

The details
When a recording is shared with the teacher, an alert shows up on the teacher’s computer. Now the teacher can check the recorded passage for:
- Hesitation
- Mispronunciation
- Left out words
- And more
One of the best things about Fluency Tutor is that it is integrated with Google. Thanks to this integration, a Google for Education school can:
- Share passages through their Google Classrooms
- Have instant access to an updated student list and ways to keep track of the assessments and recordings
- Go to almost any website and convert that text into content for assessments
(Note: This is a feature of the Fluency Tutor Chrome extension)
Go ahead and give Fluency Tutor a try, and see how it helps you assess reading fluency!
