Making the Most of Summer with STEAM

On June 28th, the Long Island STEAM Committee met at the William T. Rodger Middle School in Kings Park to support the school’s STEM summer camp.

With fifty-three students and a team of teachers, principals and administrators from Long Island school districts, Teq’s team of Professional Development Specialists delivered STEM activities that were new to both students and teachers.

Throughout the day, the students collaborated with Teq’s PD team and the STEAM committee in a series of hands-on learning activities that involved low tech tools, as well as high-tech tools like the Labdisc portable science lab.

Learning for Everyone

According to PD Specialist, Brittany Handler, “[when teachers start STEAM initiatives], they tend to be a little bit nervous. They feel like they’re not the expert anymore.” But Brittany says that’s not necessarily an issue. “They don’t need to be experts anymore. They can be learning with the students, and even when students may know more than the teachers, they’re ready to dive in with them [the teachers]. They can
